Beautiful and headstrong, Jane Long earned the name "Mother of Texas" even though she probably wasn't the first Anglo woman to have a child in Texas.  Strong-willed, she waited in vain for the return of her military commander husband, even flying her red petticoat from the flagpole to make Karankawa Indians believe soldiers were still there.  Spurning all offers of marriage, the beautiful widow became a successful business woman.  She owned land, had her own cattle brand, and entertained all the famous people of the day at her boarding houses.

WHAT OTHERS HAVE SAID ABOUT THIS BOOK:

Letters to Oma author Marj Gurasich: "...clever illustrations by Ginnie Roeder (find the trunks!).  Mary Wade has produced another historical gem."

Review of Texas Books:  "Mary Dodson Wade has attempted in very few words and pages to describe the life of a remarkable woman....She does an admirable job of setting down a linear skeleton of facts....Virginia Marsh Roeder does a good job of illustrating the story.  The small pen-and-ink drawings found in an oval beneath each page are an interesting way to tell the story in pictures, while the larger, color illustrations complement the tale."

"Children's Corner" The Social Studies TEXAN: "A warmly related tale which is inspiring as well as interesting, this story of a strong female character will be a valuable addition to the classroom, school, or home library."
