| ESTEVAN |
| Walking
Across America |
|
| Estevan, a slave born in
Morocco, was one of the three men, along with Cabeza de Vaca, who survived shipwreck and
harsh years in the American Southwest in the 1500s. Soon after he got to Mexico
City, the Spanish viceroy sent back him back north to find a way for Coronado's army to
reach the fabled Seven Cities of Gold. Of course, there were no such places. Estevan got
as far as the Zuņi pueblo, on the border between what is today Arizona and New Mexico.
